Although percentages vary from grade to grade, the national averages of results (from figures released by the Associated Board – scroll down for details) are roughly as follows:
Pass with Distinction: 15%
Pass with Merit: 30%
Pass with either Distinction or Merit: 45%
Pass (without Distinction or Merit): 50%
The results for my pupils over the last three years (see details below) are as follows:
Pass with Distinction (18): 35%
Pass with Merit (17): 33%
Pass with either Distinction or Merit: 68%
Pass (without Distinction or Merit) (16): 31%

June 2010 – Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music award
Many congratulations to Elton who scored a superb 145 marks out of 150 in his Grade 8 piano examination, having just turned 12 a week before the exam itself. He has been awarded the Sheila Mossman Memorial Prize for Pianoforte and a cheque for £200. The Prize is in memory of the late Sheila Mossman, erstwhile Associated Board examiner, and is awarded to the candidate who gains the highest mark in the country for the grade in question. A truly outstanding achievement.
